Let's Begin With Clicker Training

Let's get started!


Clicker training is a fun way to train animals of all shapes and sizes. I am going to focus on training horses with this method but, I have trained dogs using clicker training also.

First, you need to obtain a clicker which is a small square device that makes a distinct noise when depressed. Next get some treats that your horse enjoys, Apple Jack cereal works really well with my horse.

This method works so well because your horse is able to understand what you want from him very quickly. First we are going to get your horse familiar with the clicker and what this training is all about. This training is called reward reinforcement where your horse is rewarded for positive behavior.


You will find as you progress with this type of training your horse will try harder to give you the desired behavior. You don't have to change your current training program, just add this method into what you are using now to get quicker results.

Set your horse up for success, put him in a controlled environment where he does not have to compete for the treats. Have your clicker in one hand and treats readily available so that they can be given immediately after the click is heard. The one thing you don't want is your horse to be pushy about getting the food he knows you have. Be Patient! The minute he is not mauling you or looks away click and immediately give the treat. At this point we are just getting your horse to understand that the click means his reward is coming.

After about 3 sessions start waiting a second or two between clicks, always rewarding immediately following the click. Do this for about 3 to 4 days, 2 to 3 times a day. Each session should last about 5 to 10 minutes. Don't worry if you can not spend that much time with your horse. Each time you see him do a session before your training and one right before you put him away for the night.
